The eyes are responsible for assisting in showing emotion and are used for communicating with others, making them one of the first facial features noticed. Being such a noticeable feature, it is important for the eyes to have a fresh, youthful look. What is blepharoplasty?
Many women notice a loss of elasticity in their skin as they grow older, which sometimes results in excess tissue around the eyes. Both the upper lid and lower lids can have excess skin and excess fat, which is either caused by aging or heredity. The process of blepharoplasty removes this excess skin, tissue and fat to tighten the area around the eye and create a fresher, more youthful look. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes - both features that make you look older and more tired than you feel. Puffiness and droopiness may also interfere with your vision.
Eyelid surgery can enhance your appearance, but it will not necessarily change your looks. It is typically performed on people age 35 or older, but if droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age.
Dr. Lefkovits performs blepharoplasty in his Manhattan cosmetic surgery office, usually under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. The upper lid incision falls into the crease; the lower lid incision is made just under the eyelashes though sometimes it can be made on the inside of the eyelid, also.
After eyelid surgery, you will return to the office in four or five days, at which time, the stitches will be removed. There will be swelling and black and blue discoloration, which may take one to two weeks to subside.
Makeup and cover-up can usually be used after the stitches are removed.
The potential risks with this procedure are minimal, and all risks will be fully explained to you during your initial consultation at Dr. Lefkovits' office.
