Chin Augmentation is a common surgical procedure used to bring balance to your facial structure by giving your chin either a more defined appearance or by making it smaller. This procedure is often paired with nose surgery in an effort to achieve facial proportion, since the size of the chin may magnify or minimize the perceived size of your nose. This surgery can be as simple as injecting temporary soft tissue to more advanced procedures that include implanting a silicone chin implant or genioplasty (chin advancement), which moves the chin bone forward.

When considering facial implants, the good news is that this procedure has the lowest risks of all forms of plastic surgery. Facial implants are safe and are made from either non-toxic silicone or non-toxic expanded plytetrafluorethylene. Possible risks associated with chin surgery include:

• Bruising, swelling, bleeding, scarring, infections or numbness in the face
• Possibility of being displeased with results
• Facial implants might change position, making a second operation necessary

Infections are rare and can be usually be treated quickly with antibiotics. However, if the antibiotics do not clear up the infection, in some rare cases the facial implant must be removed.

Shifting is also rare, but the implants do occasionally move out of alignment. Even if an implant shifts a very small distance, it can present a problem. If this does occur, a second surgical procedure to correct the problem may be necessary.
