Female Ear Surgery

Rather than hiding protruding or drooping ears behind long hair, there are surgical options that allow for these types of ears to be corrected. New York plastic surgeon, Dr. George Lefkovits, MD recommends that protruding ears be repaired no earlier than 5 to 6 years of age, at which point the ears have reached near total development.
Most ear surgeries are performed to correct:
- Lop-ears
- Protruding ears
- The absence of an opening in the middle ear
- The absence of the entire ear
These surgeries do not impact hearing ability but will make a profound effect on you or your child's overall self-confidence and well-being.
Corrective surgery should be considered if your ears stick out more than four-fifths (4/5) of an inch from the back of the head. Planning the surgery at a young age has two benefits: the cartilage is more pliable, making reshaping easier, and the young patient will benefit by avoiding relentless teasing by other children. In addition to correcting protrusion, ears may also be reshaped, reduced in size, or made more symmetrical.

Correcting Ear Deformities
Ear surgery can also correct common ear deformities that occur during growth or from injury. Sometimes the cartilage that gives shape to the upper portion of the ear does not form. Known as lop-ear deformity, which is inherited, and without the structure necessary it can cause the ear to stick out or flop down. This problem is corrected through a series of permanent stitches used to tie and support a fold in the ear.
Ear surgery can be performed under local anesthesia in adults but requires general anesthesia in your children. The incision lies in the back of the ear, to avoid detection. A bandage is worn for about 5 days, and then you will be asked to wear a headband at night. Stitches are removed 10 to 14 days after the procedure.
Correcting Torn Earlobes
Women who wear earrings are at risk of tearing their earlobes, either from catching them on clothing, other objects, or being tugged by a baby. Earlobe tears can be easily repaired surgically, and they typically heal quickly with minimal scarring. In most cases, the earlobe can be pierced again four to six weeks after earlobe surgery.
